School History

owlMay 1902 - At a meeting local families decided to build a school. It cost 47(or $94.00)

Nov 1902 - No. 3440 school was opened. It was called fassifern School. It was about 5km east of the current Highlands School.

1908 - The school was renamed Highlands School.

1916 - A spring of water bubbled in the middle of the school grounds. They used it for drinking water instead of tank water.

1920 - The school was moved to it present location by horses.

1934 - Highlands School was burnt to the ground and all the early records lost. The students had to go to the Grant Reed's property and work in the kitchen. The Highlands Hall was built and the school resumed there.

1936 - Mr. D W. Maher was appointed as teacher. He continued in this position for 8 years - a record for the district.

1944 - After a slow time, the school Committee started to get really active, like it is today.

1968 - Electricity was connected to the school building and they also put in toliets ( yeah! )

1985 - A farmer donated some of this land and the school moved from the Hall to the new school.

1998 -
A new building was bought to the school for the prep/1/2 and the school got 2 full time teacher, like now.

2000 -
 The school has hit the big time: 37 students enrolled this year, 2 full time teachers and 2 part time teachers, an office manager an integration aide, as well as sub-committees for sharing responsibility for maintaining the school.

2002 - The school's Centenary! A community picnic , and display of historic photos and memorabilia form part of the celebrations.
